Launched in July of 2016, Global Parametrics aims to redefine the market for disaster preparedness and response. The first seed investments in the Global Parametrics Group, were provided by Germany’s KfW on behalf of BMZ, via the InsuResilience Investment Fund, and the UK's Department for International Development. GP’s founding team has accumulated decades of experience across different disciplines, including alternative risk transfer, emerging market finance, climate & seismic modelling, asset management, startups and public-private partnerships.

Hector Ibarra

Chief Executive Officer

Hector Ibarra

Hector has worked for over 20 years driving innovation in the financial industry for multilateral agencies, financial intermediaries and national/regional governments. As Lead Financial Officer at the World Bank, he designed and placed over $1 billion in disaster risk financing products. Hector also has significant commercial experience; prior to his role at the World Bank he was Assistant VP for Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) at Partner Re, where he originated and oversaw a portfolio of over $400 million.

Angus Kirk

Angus Kirk

Angus has over 20 years’ experience as a professional lawyer, with a breadth of knowledge advising both public and private sector entities on a wide range of legal and regulatory issues, structures and transactions. Angus spent much of his early career working within corporate law at City of London firms Travers Smith and Hogan Lovells, before becoming partner at a niche international development focused law firm, MDY Legal. 

Prof. Jerry Skees

Founder / Chief Strategy Officer

Prof. Jerry Skees

With a career of 35 years as a professor at the University of Kentucky, Jerry and his previous firm, GlobalAgRisk, have been on the forefront of many important innovations in low and middle-income countries relating to weather and seismic risk. He led the development of the first index insurance product for a US crop insurance program in 1991, leading to work on weather index insurance with the World Bank in the mid-1990s. Jerry was instrumental in developing the globally acclaimed Index-Based Livestock Insurance Program in Mongolia and in providing core research in Ethiopia that led to the African Risk Capacity facility. He was key in developing the world’s first regulated insurance product in Peru paying before a disaster, coined forecast insurance and laying the foundation for ongoing global efforts on forecast-based financing.

Dan Bierenbaum

Dan Bierenbaum

Dan is a co-founder and Vice President heading up GP’s Washington DC office. He plays a leading role within the company's product design and structuring activities for clients. Dan brings over 10 years of experience working in financial services in low and middle-income countries to catalyse economic growth through foreign investment and the development of local financial market infrastructure. Dan has extensive experience with start-ups through his own ventures in Haiti, Mongolia and Burkina Faso as well as his previous role at the University of Virginia's entrepreneurship centre. Dan has a MSc from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a BSc in Physics from Duke University.

Toby Behrmann

Toby Behrmann

Toby is a financial services specialist with an interest in bringing together partnerships to drive new business through innovation in products and technology.  With over 15 years’ commercial and developmental experience deploying financial products in emerging economies, he brings his strong relationships and deep understanding of the market to Global Parametrics. Toby began his career at AIG before leaving to build out a boutique agency focused on Asian, African and South American markets. Most recently, he was a founding member of a microinsurance start-up that used mobile technology to bring insurance and other services to the unbanked in Myanmar, Nepal and the Philippines.

Juan Marcano

Partnerships and Business Development

Juan Marcano

Juan is a finance professional with over 10 years of experience in the financial services sector. His focus is on building partnerships and driving business development based on his detailed knowledge of the weather risk market. Previously, Juan worked with Swiss Re's Weather & Energy team, where he was responsible for advising on structured weather, energy and commodity solutions. Before joining Swiss Re, he worked on renewable energy financing for ING in Europe, and project finance advisory in the US energy sector, following several years as a field engineer for Schlumberger. Juan holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and an MBA from The George Washington University.

Wendy Smith

Wendy Smith

Wendy has a demonstrated history of working in the international development industry, with a focus on disaster risk financing and management. Prior to joining Global Parametrics, she was employed as an economist at Maxwell Stamp where she was involved in a number of projects within LMIC countries. Wendy holds an MSc in Risk, Disaster and Resilience from University College London and an MA in Economics from the University of Glasgow.

Michael Williams

GIS Specialist

Michael Williams

Michael works in sales origination and as a GIS specialist for Global Parametrics. He has experience in programming with R (including Shiny), GIS, Javascript, Python and PostgreSQL. Michael has a keen interest in exploring the spatial and non-spatial relationships between the many datasets that contribute to building GP products, as well as the real-world implications of this work. He holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Kentucky.

Andrea Piatti

Andrea Piatti

Andrea is the current Head of European Mergers & Acquisitions for Armor, where he is responsible for business development in Europe. He has held various roles within reinsurance and ILS at Partner RE and Swiss Re Capital Markets and was previously Head of Structured Solutions (EMEA) and Global Product Leader at MS Amlin in Zurich. In this role, he developed and led MS Amlin global structured reinsurance propositions, and was instrumental in the set-up and development of MS Amlin’s Zurich operations. Andrea holds an MSc in Mathematics and is a certified Financial Risk Manager.

Malcolm Haylock, PhD

Chief Scientist

Malcolm Haylock, PhD

Malcolm is a specialist in the development of catastrophe models for weather-related perils, with a PhD in statistical climatology from the University of East Anglia. He has over 15 years of research experience focussing on historical and expected future changes in climate, in addition to seasonal variations. Additionally, Malcolm has undertaken numerous positions at renowned reinsurers to develop their catastrophe models. With Aspen Re, Malcolm headed the natural catastrophe risk research programme. At Partner Re, he was responsible for their in-house European windstorm model, then broadening into an overview of all wind-related perils.

Alin Radu, PhD

Alin Radu, PhD

Alin specialises in the development of natural-catastrophe risk models and the structuring of risk-transfer products. Previously, Alin was a Marie Curie Individual Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, and a Senior Research Engineer at AIR Worldwide, where he worked on disaster-risk financing projects with the World Bank in developing countries. Alin’s research interests are in the quantification and propagation of uncertainty in risk models; and his background is in structural engineering, earthquake engineering and engineering seismology. Alin holds PhD and MSc degrees in Earthquake Engineering and Applied Probability and Statistics from Cornell University; a MSc in Analysis and Design of Structures to Hazards from City University of London; and a BSc in Civil Engineering.

Jason Hartell, PhD

Agricultural Economist

Jason Hartell, PhD

Jason is a risk model/product structuring specialist and an agricultural economist with over 15 years of experience within emerging economies. He has participated in a wide array of projects involving natural disaster risk in Asia and Africa. Jason’s primary responsibility involves modelling conditions which create shocks in food production and collaborating with stakeholders to create financial disaster risk management solutions to manage disruptions to livelihoods, the value-chain, and financial institutions lending into agriculture. Jason holds a MSc in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota and a PhD from the University of Kentucky.

Aaron Michel, PhD

Chief Technology Officer

Aaron Michel, PhD

Aaron is a structural engineer and specialist in the development of multi-peril catastrophe models and risk transfer products, with a focus on the developing world. He has knowledge of structural analysis, structural design, material science, numerical modelling, and network modelling, and worked as a Senior Engineer at industry-leader AIR Worldwide where he developed supply chain risk models and risk financing initiatives for private and sovereign clients. Aaron holds a PhD and MSc in Structural Engineering and a BSc in Civil Engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer and post-earthquake structural inspector in the state of California.

Michael Wagner

Michael Wagner

Michael is a geospatial software developer and database expert. For the last fifteen years he has implemented and customised geospatial software and provided consultation and training on geospatial information and the relating standards and technology in numerous projects and countries. Michael is a certified PostgreSQL Professional and has extensive experience in designing, configuring and tuning spatial databases. At Global Parametrics he is taking care of optimising data workflows and keeping database performance in peak condition. Michael holds an MSc in Geographic Information Science and Systems and is a postgraduate engineer in geoinformatics and land surveying.

Thomas Johnson

Thomas Johnson

Thomas is a software developer with experience in a variety of roles and environments. Following a successful stint at Google, he moved into a tutoring role, teaching data analysis techniques using R and Shiny in both California and Chile, before his employment at Global Parametrics. Thomas’ interests lie in rapid development of data analysis tools, open source software, environmental issues. He holds a BSc from NC State University's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in Environmental Economic Policy.

Michael has over 20 years' experience in IT development and administration, including installing, using and maintaining Linux Operating systems.  During his career, he gained valuable knowledge of networking, system administration and learning to work with numerous programming languages. He has obtained the Comptia A+ Certification and is studying for Red Hat Certified System Administrator Certification.

Annyes Laheurte

Annyes has over 20 years’ experience in financial reporting for international organisations within the financial services industry, with specialist knowledge of risk and control environments across companies. Whilst working at Lloyd’s of London, she focussed on governance and financial controls as well as mitigating operational risk through control monitoring and enhancement. Annyes is a Chartered Global Management Accountant and member of the Institute of Risk Management and was awarded Specialist status.

Sharon Arnold

Sharon is the Financial and Office Administrator at Global Parametrics and serves as the Human Resources coordinator. She has over 15 years of experience keeping books using QuickBooks software. Previously, Sharon held various roles at an administrative capacity, including at the University of Kentucky and within the garment industry.

Justine is a certified financial professional with over 20 years of experience working in the financial services sector. Over an illustrious career within various positions at Lloyds of London, she has demonstrated professional knowledge of financial reporting, VAT preparation, risk management and internal controls. Nina Shapiro

Over the course of an illustrious career with the World Bank, Nina held several senior management and operating roles. From 2000- 2011, Nina was a member of the Management Group and was Vice President Finance and Treasurer of the International Finance Corporation. She sat for 7 years on the Board of MAN Group as well as Zurich Insurance Group’s Investment Management Advisory Council and the Carbon Trust’s Advisory Panel.

Alexander Vleming

Alexander Vleming

Alexander is a Financial Consultant and Director, with an established career encompassing financial strategy and insurance. He is passionate about financial solutions for international development, and an investment committee member of InsuResilience investment fund. Alexander is founder and CEO of Rushmere Capital, providing independent financial and strategic advisory services in insurance, FinTech and InsurTech. Previously, Alexander held the role of Managing Director and Regional Head of Principal Investments for Swiss Re, identifying, transacting and managing a portfolio of direct equity investments internationally. For Rothschild & Co, he developed and managed investment banking opportunities in Europe and Asia. As VP of Investment Banking at HSBC, he focussed on developing and delivering investment banking solutions for global insurance clients.

Deborah A. Hazell

Deborah A. Hazell

Deborah is an Executive Officer of Fischer Francis Trees & Watts (FFTW), a fixed income, institutional asset management firm. She joined FFTW’s New York office in 1999 and prior to her appointment as CEO in 2008, headed the Global Client Service and Business Development team. Deborah previously worked for UBS Asset Management, where she spent nine years as a Global Portfolio Manager. Previously, she managed global fixed income portfolios at Chase Investors International in London, which was subsequently sold to UBS Asset Management. Deborah began her financial career in the investment management department of Saudi International Bank, where she also managed US and global fixed income portfolios. Deborah has a BA in Economics from New York University.
